North Lindsey College Transport Studies Lecturer ‘Pep Torracas’, knowledge and expertise in his field of heavy vehicle engineering was recognised recently when he was asked to be a judge at the World Skills UK Show finals 2016 at the National Exhibition Centre (N.E.C) in Birmingham.

World Skills showcase the value of skills and raise the recognition of skilled professionals worldwide. Lecturer Pep Torraca, was delighted to be involved in the competition, recognising his knowledge and expertise in the field of heavy duty engineering.

Pep originally completed his training at North Lindsey College before spending fourteen years out in industry working on heavy goods vehicles.  He has worked at North Lindsey College for thirteen years and now shares his expertise by delivering training to future heavy vehicle goods engineers.
World Skills 2016 was the first year that the heavy vehicle industry has been included in the competition.  The College lecturer was invited to participate by the awarding body for the Institute of the Motor Industry to help judge on the heavy vehicle practical tasks.

Pep said: “It was a great honour to be invited to judge and it was a great all round experience.  The six candidates who made it through to the final should be very proud of themselves, as this in itself was a fantastic achievement.”

The finalists had to compete with each other by demonstrating their skills.  The selected winner was Shaun Richards, who works for Scania Trucks.  He won his regional heat at Winsford in Cheshire which got him through to the World Skills final at the NEC in Birmingham and he has now made it through to the World Skills, World Final, held in Abu Dhabi in October 2017.

Pep has now been invited to judge the local heats in June 2017 and hopefully he will be present for the UK finals again in November 2017.
