Student Etches Out a Business to Support University
An animal care student at North Lindsey College has turned her hobby into a business, in hope this will support her financially whilst studying at University.
Young business entrepreneur, Demi Walker (19), set up her own business creating laser engraved products. The business has now been operating for around a year after Demi’s father purchased an engraver. Demi soon found out that she enjoyed working on various pieces and started creating personalised gifts for her friends and family and decided to start up a small business to earn some extra money for university by selling off some of her work.
Demi started working mainly on keyrings and coasters and stated that Games of Thrones and Harry Potter is particularly popular at the moment but she has also more recently started to engrave from photographs but says she is still perfecting her technique.
Demi’s true passion is working with animals and she has accepted a place at Edinburgh Napier University, studying to be a veterinary nurse. She will continue to operate the business whilst at University with the support of her dad.
Demi said, “My business has helped me build up my confidence, especially my people skills which I will need when I qualify as a veterinary nurse.
“It makes me go out to events to sell my products and it also motivates me. It has also brought me and my dad closer as he helps out. It is hard to balance both work and college but I have also had to learn time management skills.”
