What are the Course Details?
This apprenticeship will help you to develop your electrical skills, knowledge and experience. It will also enable you to gain valuable work experience and obtain qualifications whilst working with an employer.
Is the Course for Me?
Apprenticeships combine on the job and off the job training. On the job, an apprentice will work with an employer’s mentor or line manager, learning the skills on site and working towards the competency element of the qualifications. Off the job, apprentices work with their assessor and have access to resources, such as a workbook, to ensure they learn the knowledge elements of the framework. If the required level of Maths, English and ICT qualifications have not been previously achieved or where qualifications are no longer in date, apprentices must also complete functional skill qualifications in these subjects. These would be completed through agreed delivery methods and support including classroom, distance learning, e-learning and assessor support.
What are the Entry Requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements, however GCSEs grade 9-4 or A*-C in maths, English, and ICT and a Level 2 engineering qualification are desirable.
If you haven’t already achieved a GCSE grade 4 or grade C in English or maths, then you will study either GCSE or functional skills English or maths alongside your other qualifications.
What will I Learn?
Units you may study include:
- Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
- Using and interpreting engineering data and documentation
- Working efficiently and effectively in engineering
- Mathematics for the Engineering Technician
- Electrical and electronic principles
- Computer aided design for technicians
- Electrical technology
- Employability skills
How will I Learn?
You will attend College one day per week to develop gain underpinning knowledge required for your framework components. Your employer will provide on the job training to develop your practical skills.
How will I be Assessed?
The apprenticeship will primarily be assessed by direct observation of your work practice, oral questioning, written assignments, professional discussion, learning journal/diary and witness testimony. Your assessor from College will visit you in the workplace on a regular basis to support you throughout your apprenticeship. Functional skills are assessed through external tests. Where possible these tests will be taken on the day you attend College. However, you may have to attend on a different day subject to the timetabling of external assessments.
Are there any Trips or Visits?
You will be encouraged to research sector related websites to explore the range of conference/workshops to support your learning. Your employer may ask you to attend additional training if it is identified for you.
Is there any Work Experience?
You must be employed in a relevant job for at least 30 hours per week and your employer will provide on the job training. You should keep a note of your training to include in your reflective learning journal/diary. Your assessor will agree a plan to observe your work practice and this will form part of your assessment for your qualification.
What can I Progress to?
This qualification will help you to meet the development and qualification needs to advance your career in engineering. After completing a Level 3 qualification in electrical maintenance you could progress on to study engineering and related fields at university. Alternatively, you could progress on to a higher level apprenticeship. Studying electrical maintenance could lead to a career in electrical maintenance, electrical installations, manufacturing and many other opportunities.
