The perfect introduction to engineering, this Level 2 qualification will help you to progress on to a career in mechanical engineering. During the course you will develop your mechanical skills in preparation for a career in engineering.

Is the Course for Me?

A career in Engineering is perfect for those who like to be hands-on and enjoy practical learning opportunities. The area offers an opportunity to develop skills and knowledge required by employers in engineering such as fundamental concepts, principles and theories. There is a huge demand locally and nationally for engineers and now is a great time to be thinking about it as your future.

What are the Entry Requirements?

Ideally at least 3 GCSEs at grade 4 or grade C including maths. Alternatively a Level 1 qualification in engineering.

If you haven’t already achieved a GCSE grade 4 or grade C in English or maths, then you will study either GCSE or functional skills English or maths alongside your other qualifications.

What will I Learn?

Mandatory Units include:
- Engineering environment awareness
- Engineering techniques
- Engineering maths and science principles
- Employability skills

Optional Units (mechanical):
- Fitting and assembly techniques
- Manual turning techniques

Students can study a range of GCSEs or AS Levels alongside their main vocational qualification.

How will I Learn?

You will learn through a combination of classroom sessions and practical activity.

How will I be Assessed?

40% of assessment is by exam and 60% by coursework

Are there any Trips or Visits?

Students may have the opportunity to study additional subjects and participate in sporting, social or enterprising activities. Examples of the various activities will be made available to you by your tutors. Opportunities are varied and change each year.

Is there any Work Experience?

We plan to offer work experience, employer talks, employer visits and other employer involvement in all our programmes.

What can I Progress to?

After completing your course you could progress on to study a Level 3 Diploma in Mechanical Maintenance Engineering. Alternatively, you could progress straight into employment in the engineering industry including an apprenticeship. Studying mechanical engineering could lead to a career working in machining, plant maintenance, manufacturing and many other opportunities.
